Luxembourg public holidays differ from those of its neighbours, in the year shown above as in any other. Europe Day and the Grand Duke’s official birthday are specific to Luxembourg. St Stephen’s Day is also a holiday there, unlike France outside Alsace-Moselle. A practice that sees cross-border patients, or employs staff who live across the border, plans its year around more than one calendar.

The planner brings together the public holidays of Luxembourg, France outside Alsace-Moselle, Alsace-Moselle, Belgium and Rhineland-Palatinate. For each holiday it gives the date, the weekday and a note when it falls on a weekend. It spots possible bridge days from your opening hours, counts the days your phone goes unanswered, and lists school holidays wherever an official source publishes them.

There is also a calendar to add to your diary. The rest of the page explains where the dates come from, how bridge days are identified and how to prepare the phone for closure days.

How this tool works

Each table names the official source it comes from. Luxembourg uses the Inspection du travail et des mines; France and Alsace-Moselle use Service-Public. Belgium uses its Royal Observatory, and Rhineland-Palatinate its interior ministry. The dates set by law and those that depend on Easter are checked whenever a year is added.

Luxembourg’s school holidays come from its Ministry of Education, and those of Rhineland-Palatinate from the Land’s education ministry. French school holidays are those of zone B, which covers the Nancy-Metz academy, from the calendar Service-Public publishes. For Belgium we have not yet settled on an official source, so the page shows none.

A bridge day appears when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday: the Monday or Friday beside it may become a day off for patients and staff alike. The tool flags it only if your practice opens on both the holiday and the bridge day. A practice closed on Tuesdays loses nothing to a Tuesday holiday, and the tool sees no bridge there.

In Luxembourg, a legal public holiday that falls on a Sunday also gives employees a compensatory day off; the page notes this under the table, with its source. A practice near a border should compare its own region’s holidays with those its patients observe. A Luxembourg holiday can be a working day in Metz or Trier, which changes when cross-border patients call.

The count of unanswered days takes the public holidays that fall on a day you normally open, going by the hours given. It is the number of days on which, with nothing arranged, a calling patient reaches a closed line. From November the planner opens on the following year, so that next year’s leave can be planned.

Plan staff leave around the same list. When the team takes a bridge day off, the phone still needs a clear closure message or someone to answer. The count above shows how many public holidays fall on your usual opening days.

The downloadable calendar contains the public holidays of the region and year shown, ready to import into your own diary or the practice’s. The bridge days are worked out in your browser; all we receive is a signal that a calendar was downloaded.

A closure day needs preparing on the phone as well: a closure message that gives the reopening date saves patients from calling again and again. With ClinicAll, the receptionist answers on that day, gives the reopening date and takes a callback request for the team; how it works has the details. Our methodology page explains how we keep these dates current, while the security page explains how requests are handled. Questions about this tool

Which public holidays are specific to Luxembourg?

Europe Day and the Grand Duke’s official birthday, the National Day. St Stephen’s Day is also a holiday in Luxembourg, as it is in Alsace-Moselle and Rhineland-Palatinate, but not in the rest of France.

How does the tool spot a bridge day?

It looks for public holidays on a Tuesday or a Thursday, then at the Monday or Friday beside them. It flags the bridge only if your practice opens on both days, going by your hours.

Are Belgian school holidays shown?

Not yet: school holidays appear only once an official source has been settled on. For Belgium, the page lists public holidays only.

What does the downloadable calendar contain?

The public holidays of the region and year shown, each as an all-day event. The file imports into most calendar applications.
